Picture Australia

Well in a way this is a plug as I have been loading my photos here for a while. Picture Australia have been running a flickr group for some time now. They grab photos and upload them to their site as thumbnails linking back to the original. When people search the National Archives, they can now also get photos from this flickr pool.

It is quite a good arrangement and many people, like myself, are only too happy to have our images used in this way.

One of the banes of my life!

Well this man wrote the one program that causes me more problems than any other. Even more problems than that horrible cisco term flapping. Yes I am sad to say... this man wrote the ping program. Not only did he write it, but he wrote it in one night with no planning. Bastard I say!

Ping is a program that helps tell if the network is working. But it provides very little information. I work in a company that supplies networks. So people say the worst things like - there was 10% packet loss when I used Ping. Or worse, I sent these humungus pings and they all failed!

Yes, it's true! I'm the author of ping for UNIX. Ping is a little thousand-line hack that I wrote in an evening which practically everyone seems to know about. ... If I'd known then that it would be my most famous accomplishment in life, I might have worked on it another day or two and added some more options.

Calandar on the web

Well I have posted a public calendar on the web using ical. It is better than yahoo - for only 1 reason. It synchronises with my calendar on my computer with no effort. If you use an ical format application (such as apples iCal) then you can link automatically for the calendar. However I will not publish the details here.

The web site is simple and easy to use. Best of all it is free. Once you set up an account it is easy to link the calendar to the site. I have two calendars that I use, one is public, the other private. I actually subscribe to two other calendars, on anther site. One is NSW school holidays and the other, Australian Public Holidays.

One day I will find a genealogy web site that works the way I want it to. This seems to be the closest so far.

This is an interesting design magazine from Japan. Lots of good design with a pod-cast to boot! (Though I have not listened to it yet.)

I love the proliferation of photos from the protest yesterday, unfortunately I did not read the group post till the afternoon and so did not get there. But there are lots of photos on Flickr of this protest. This is my favorite image.

The source of all those views

About a month ago, I added a little utility to some of my pages, not including the family history ones, which show where in the world the clicks are coming from. It is quite and interesting graph.
